Swafford Family Farm

July 16, 2013

Baskets and baskets of bright red tomatoes shared space with ripe peaches and green peppers, just waiting to be eaten, at the Swafford Farms produce stand yesterday. Running that stand, and the 250 acre farm that supplies it, is Cameron Swafford, son to Gary Swafford, owner and operator of the family farm that grows 20+ varieties of produce.
Swafford Farms is the first farm the Chattanooga Area Food Bank worked with to support the Farm to Family initiative. We visited yesterday to say hello to Cameron and ask him to share a few thoughts on why it’s important his family participates in the initiative.
“Most everybody’s struggling these days,” he says when asked if he knows of people who have a hard time making ends meet. “We’re glad to work with the food bank, knowing our food will help families.” Last fall, when Cameron knew of several farms with extra produce that couldn’t be sold in the retail market, he rounded them all up and contacted the Chattanooga Area Food Bank and its sister food bank in Nashville. “We were able to get most of that food distributed back to the food banks. It was a great way to help out the farmers and the food banks at the same time.”
Swafford Farms is located on Summer City Road, right off Hwy. 30 in Pikeville, Tennessee. Their farm stand is open 7-7 Monday through Saturday and 1-6 on Sundays. Give them a call at (423) 447-7480 or stop on by.
