Senior Citizens Facing Hunger Say Thanks
Jay and Judy

Jay and Judy are going through a tough time right now. A while back, Judy’s doctor told her she’d need a liver transplant, something she hopes will happen soon.

The couple is doing their best to get by on a fixed income, which barely covers their mortgage and utilities. They’re also having a hard time keeping up with their medical bills. With all the tests and treatment Judy’s received, they don’t know when they’ll get ahead on their payments.

Because Jay and Judy have so little money to purchase groceries each month, what food they can afford isn’t usually very healthy. Between Judy’s liver problems and Jay’s diabetes, both need access to nutrient-rich foods that are lower in salt, sugar and saturated fats. But these items tend to be more expensive at the store.

That’s why, a few months ago, the couple began visiting Providence Ministries, a Chattanooga Area Food Bank partner in Dalton, Ga. where Jay and Judy live. It’s been a real lifeline.

“We eat lunches here and take home some groceries for a few days,” Jay says, explaining how your gifts are helpful.

Judy might eventually be able to qualify for disability assistance, which will help ease the burden on the family’s budget. But it’s still not clear when — or if — that will happen. Today, they’re just happy people like you care enough to ensure they have access to nutritious food.

“We are both grateful for this support,” Judy says. “This food comes in handy.”
