Hungry? We Can Help

Living Hopefully.

Volunteer of the Quarter: Gerry Bettis

A person with a warm, caring heart, Gerry moved home to Chattanooga several years ago from the east coast to care for her mother and aunt, who were in poor health. When her mother passed away, Gerry reached out to Volunteers of Chattanooga, which suggested she give her time at the Food Bank.

Gerry took the recommendation back in 2012 — and we’re so glad she did! She now volunteers packing food boxes for distribution to our network of partner agencies.

After a lifetime of teaching school, Gerry says she’s glad to have a volunteer position that keeps her on her feet. She also enjoys giving time with a local nonprofit — she loves to know her effort is making a difference right here in her own community.

When she’s not at Chattanooga Area Food Bank, Gerry’s very involved with her church, St. Martin of Tours, where she’s an active member and sings in the choir.

Now that she’s nearing 80, Gerry appreciates that the Food Bank gives her a meaningful way to fill her time. She feels that she has been blessed throughout her life and is grateful to have a way to give back.

“If God gives you the means, then you really, really need to give back,” she says.

Our sincere thanks go out to Gerry for her commitment to hunger relief here in our community!
